Oral cancer can present in many forms and is caused by a variety of factors, mainly smoking, alcohol and viruses.
We strongly recommend that if you notice any usual lesion in your mouth that you attend the dentist to have it checked out. So that the dentist can detect any early signs, we advise everyone to have check ups at least once per year (even if you have no teeth).
Giving up smoking, reducing your alcohol intake and eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables per day all help to prevent oral cancer.
Regular check ups allow the dentist to note any early changes in the tissues.
See www.quit.ie for advice on giving up smoking.
